Tips for Using Dewatering Bags on Your Construction Site

By Rich Ahlgren

As a construction professional, you know that there are many aspects that go into keeping your construction site secure and safe. You not only have to worry about yourself, but you have to worry about every member of your construction team, community members, and the random passerby. There are many ways to keep your construction site on-task and safe, and one of those ways is to use a dewatering bag.
On any construction site, and yours is included, you will experience sediment discharge and debris. This is especially true after a storm because the water and wind will push that debris into the gutters and through the drains. And that will eventually reach the unfiltered water sources, which is not a good thing. But that can be avoided by using a dewatering bag. A dewatering bag controls the sediment discharge. When water is pumped through the bag, it separates the sediment and debris from the water, before it reaches a fresh water supply.
To install, all you have to do is attach it onto the discharge hose. Once you have done that, it easily and conveniently traps the sediment, and much easier than your average sediment trap. Also, you have the option to include oil absorbents, making sure that the storm water that makes it to the fresh water supply is as clean and pure as possible. And the best part of it all is that dewatering bags come in a variety of sizes. This ensures that your dewatering bags fit each sized grate and sewer effectively and perfectly.
While it is easy to install, it is also easy to maintain. When your dewatering bag is half full of sediment and debris, replace the bag. That is it! If you have decided to use oil absorbents with your dewatering bag, you just have to replace it once it is saturated. It could not be any easier.
Construction site safety is one of your most important tasks and responsibilities. Using a dewatering bag does just that. This way, you can rest assured that the storm drains do not fill with sediment and flood the construction site. While you may feel overwhelmed to be in charge of everything and everyone, just take it one simple step at a time. Secure one means of safety and then move on to the next item. Remember, just one step at a time and you will be well on your way.
