Mixing and Matching Patterns, Colors and Designs

By Mob Jarrock

If you've ever decorated any space, ever, you've probably found yourself wondering how to properly mix and match different patterns, colors and designs. In the interior design magazines and on television, this can almost seem effortless. Fortunately, there are a few tips and tricks you can use in your own space to create the same effortless look of mixing and matching different patterns and colors. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to do
exactly that.

Pick a Starting Point
This is the biggest obstacle you will overcome when starting this journey. Just, pick a starting point. This is true of every different type of interior design, if you don't pick a starting point, you'll never get started. Don't be afraid to just dive right in. A starting point could be anywhere: the walls, a piece of furniture, a throw rug. Anything that helps get you started.

Maintain the Solid
Before you can start adding patterns into your space, you need to have a place for the eye to settle on in your interior design. A space that gives the eye a break. Without it, your space will become visually chaotic.

Focus on the Color
When mixing and matching different patterns and designs in your space, you want to pay attention to the color. It's easier to pull different patterns together if they share a similar color. For example, you could mix stripes in black and white with an ikat pattern; or an ikat pattern with a floral pattern that features the same colors. You can use this concept in just about any space out there: living room designs, bedroom designs, even kitchen designs or bathroom designs.

Pay Attention to Shape and Scale of the Patterns
Of course, it's also important to pay some attention to the shape and lines of your chosen patterns. It's relatively easy to mix and match one or two different patterns in a single space with different shapes, but once you start incorporating multiple patterns into the space, things can get a bit overwhelming. So be sure to pay attention to the lines and shapes. Your interior design will thank you.
It's also important to pay attention to the scale, or the size, of the pattern. Larger patterns can be complimented by small patterns in similar shapes and colors and vice versa. You can also mix and match similar sizes, but be wary of mixing three, four or more, as this can result in a chaotic look.
Mixing and matching patterns, designs and different colors can be a bit difficult. However, it can be done but it takes time and patience. Don't rush the process, as you'll end up with a look that is less than visually pleasing.
